Melvin Owen Luttrell Jr., age 85, of Maryville, passed away surrounded by family on Oct. 9, 2022.

Mel was born on Aug. 6, 1937, in Knoxville. He was retired from the Tennessee Education Association where he served as UniServ Coordinator for 42 years. He was a graduate of East Tennessee State University and served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Theodore E. Chandler and U.S.S. Coral Sea. Mel was an elder at New Providence Presbyterian Church, a member of the East Tennessee Historical Society, was active with the Historic Ramsey House, and enjoyed being a member of the Knoxville Civil War Round Table. Mel served as president of the Blount County Retired Teachers’ Association, as well as the president of the Tennessee Retired Teachers’ Association. He was an avid UT football fan and proud supporter of any and all activities involving his grandsons. Mel was preceded in death by his first wife of 28 years, Ethel Johnson Luttrell; parents, M.O. Luttrell Sr. and Dora Hacker Luttrell; and brother, Jack.
