Jean Cate Cannon, 92, of Sevierville passed peacefully on Jan. 12, 2023.
She graduated Carson Newman College and taught elementary grades in Sevier and Knox counties and Clinton City schools. Jean supported missions and was a firm believer in the Great Commission: “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in my name” (Matthew 28:19). She was a member of First Baptist Church, Sevierville. She and deceased husband of 67 years, Kenneth Earl Cannon, enjoyed camping, hiking, and visiting many of the national parks, all fifty states, and several foreign countries.
She was preceded in death by parents, Edith and Martha Cate; son, Larry Cannon; sisters, Irene Munsey, Bernice Foland, Marilyn Hickman, Yvonne Bales and Joyce Cate.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Suzanne (Tom) Newman of Sevierville, Tennessee; grandchildren, Reid (Laci) Cannon of Harriman, Tennessee; Brady Cannon of Nashville, Tennessee; Thomas Newman of Sevierville, Tennessee, Rebekah (Isaiah) Gilmore of Powell, Tennessee; and two great-grandchildren due in 2023; sisters, Barbara Martin, Carolyn M. Cate; and brothers, Thurman (Norma) Cate, Harold Cate.
The family will receive friends on Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. with a Celebration of Life at 3 p.m. in the West Chapel of Atchley’s Funeral Home in Sevierville. Graveside service is on Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The King’s Academy Music Department, 202 Smothers Rd, Seymour, TN 37865.
