SEVIERVILLE — The last of three suspects in an Aug. 12 murder has now been booked at the Sevier County Jail.

Jeffery Nicholas Hudgins, 42, of Chattanooga, is charged with being an accessory to second-degree murder and tampering with evidence. He was being held Friday at the Sevier County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bond.

Hudgins is charged in connection with the Aug. 12, 2020 shooting death of Samuel Lane.

Brittany Faith Swafford, 32, of Cleveland, is accused of fatally shooting Lane when he pulled over on the shoulder of I-40 in Sevier County.

Police said Hudgins and Billie Rochelle Perry, both of Cleveland, were in a second car that followed Lane and Swafford; they are accused of helping Swafford try to make the shooting look like an accident and leave the scene.

The car was placed in neutral and rolled down a hill until it struck one of the signs at the Exit 407 interchange, according to warrants.

Hudgins and Swafford were being held at other jails, but both were brought to Sevier County in the last week.

Perry was booked at the jail in September, but has since been released on bail.
