SEVIERVILLE — The new FedEx Ground distribution facility on Interstate 40 is rapidly taking shape, although it will be a few months before they start hiring.
The new facility in the Interstate 40 Industrial Park was officially announced last August, and they are hoping to have it open this coming August, Sevier County Economic Development Council Executive Director Allen Newton said.
“They are flying out there in that building,” Newton said.
The facility will serve a local delivery area of Sevier and 10 other East Tennessee counties.
FedEx has indicated it will process 12,300 packages an hour.
Progress on the site is visible from the road, and Newton said they’re set to start paving the entrance soon.
The infrastructure is installed, and Snyder Road has been widened to accommodate the traffic, meaning a project that started with conversations about three years ago is about to be a reality.
FedEx is eventually expected to hire about 170 people to work there, and the business is expected to generate about 180 additional new jobs in the region.
“This is going to be great for the county,” Newton said.
They aren’t ready to start hiring yet, he said, and likely will take applications online when it opens due to the pandemic.
The FedEx Ground facility joins OTICS, USA, a Toyota parts manufacturer, as major tenants in the industrial park.
There are about 30 acres of buildable property left at the park, and Newton said he has heard from two prospects that could take up the remaining land if they both come.
