SEVIERVILLE — Spectrum and Charter customers in Sevier County experienced a widespread outage Thursday due to an accident in Maryville.

Spokesman Jonathan Dunagin said the accident was the result of an error by an unaffiliated construction crew working in Maryville.

“A non-Spectrum construction crew in Maryville damaged two large fiber-optic cable bundles this morning, severing more than 500 fiber strands and impacting services to Sevierville, Gatlinburg, parts of Maryville, and some surrounding areas,” he said.

The outage impacted internet, cable and phone service to business and noncommercial customers throughout those areas.

Many businesses couldn’t process credit cards due to the internet outage.

A crew was dispatched immediately to repair the lines, but Dunagin said service would be restored gradually and some outages could last into the night because they had to repair each strand individually.

“We expect complete restoration sometime during the overnight hours,” he said.
