June 21 was proclaimed as Sevier County High School 2021 TSSAA Division 1 Class AA State Championship Boys Soccer Team Day in Sevierville during a special presentation prior to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting.

SEVIERVILLE — The 2021 State Champion Sevier County High School soccer team was recognized by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen Monday night.

Monday, June 21, 2021, was proclaimed by Mayor Robbie Fox as Sevier County High School 2021 TSSAA Division 1 Class AA State Championship Boys Soccer Team Day in Sevierville.

“We can’t tell you how proud we are of you,” Fox told the team prior to reading the proclamation. “You accomplished something that no other team in Sevier County has ever done. It was amazing.”

In addition to the proclamation, Fox told the team a road sign has been planned to acknowledge the victory. The Smoky Bears beat the Page Patriots 1-0 in a dramatic finish, scoring the game’s only goal with 15 seconds left in the match. The previous state championships for the school were for girls basketball in 2002 and the 1999 football team.

“I get so swelled up with pride and happy for you guys,” Sevier County head coach Tim Bohanan said.

“You represented our city, our county, our school so well. It’s a true honor to be associated with you guys.”

The team was close in 2019, falling to Greeneville in the state championship game. Spring sports were canceled in 2020.

“No one else gets to say they did this, but you guys do,” Bohanan said.
