GATLINBURG — For approximately two hours on Friday night, runners and walkers will make their way through downtown Gatlinburg in the Running with the Bears 5K.
Proceeds from the race go to the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce Foundation.
According to promotional materials, money will be used by the foundation in its work with Friends of the Smokies “to provide resources to preserve and protect the black bear, as well as funding for the Gatlinburg Goes Green program, local scholarships, donations to schools and educational events for the community.”
Participants are encouraged to register online. Same-day registration begins Friday at 8 p.m. at Nantahala Outdoor Center, 1138 Parkway, Gatlinburg.
Posted race hours are 10 p.m.-midnight.
Runners and walkers will begin at Nantahala Outdoor Center, which is located at traffic light No. 10 at the intersection of Parkway and Ski Mountain Road. They will travel down Parkway to traffic light No. 1, then return to Nantahala Outdoor Center.
The event is sanctioned by USA Track & Field.
Registration is $35 per person.
