May 12, 2023 marked a special occasion for the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility.
For several years, Master Sergeant Catie Wilson had the idea of starting the jail’s first major Female Trustee Program.
Historically, at the detention facility, female inmates only had the opportunity to be trustees inside of their own holding areas.
Wilson researched this matter and traveled to other detention facilities in the state to observe successful programs for female inmates.
Wilson states, “I’ve wanted to start a sewing program for years which uses female trustees. This opportunity would give females the same opportunities as the male trustees.”
After proposing this idea to Sheriff Wayne Barton, Lieutenant Mikey Owens, and First Sergeant Jacob Jones, Wilson was given the green light to begin work on the project.
Barton worked tirelessly to secure funding for the purchase of industrial sewing equipment and materials for the female trustees to start producing mattresses at the detention facility for use in the facility.
On Friday, May 12, this program proudly made its first mattress.
