SEVIERVILLE — A Myrtle Beach man appears headed to a trial on charges he caused a multicar wreck last Labor Day that resulted in multiple injuries.

Randy D. Zlobec is in the Sevier County Jail awaiting trial on charges including DUI, vehicular assault, failure to stop and render aid, reckless driving, criminal impersonation, failure to wear a seat belt and four counts of aggravated assault.

On Tuesday, Zlobec’s attorney told Judge Rex Henry Ogle that Zlobec planned to stand on his plea of not guilty. His trial was set for Aug. 25.

Police say he was driving south on Highway 66 when he came upon cars that had come to a halt in the congested holiday traffic. Zlobec, however, apparently failed to stop or even slow down, police said, striking one car and causing a six-car chain reaction wreck that sent 18 people to area hospitals.

He then allegedly fled the scene as police and emergency responders came to the scene. Authorities caught him after he crossed the Little Pigeon River.

After that, he sent a letter to The Mountain Press from jail claiming his innocence. He said he wasn’t drunk at the time of the wreck, but had fallen asleep after taking a prescribed anti-anxiety pill the previous night. He claimed to have fled after being assaulted by law enforcement officers.

Police noted he used several fake names before they identified him; they also said they had no contact with him at all before arresting him after he crossed the river. Another driver involved in he wreck contradicted his story that he was beaten by officers. Brooke Rios told The Mountain Press that Zlobec ran before any law enforcement officers arrived. Her daughter, Karina, also suffered serious injuries in the wreck.

Additional investigation showed Zlobec had a number of convictions in South Carolina, including drug and traffic charges.

Well, I sure don't think he should get away with it and from the sound of things he seems guilty to me. And, if he is found guilty I have no problem with him being locked up for life. He is a danger to everyone on the streets and these poor people were unlucky enough to cross paths with him and prove it.

There was infact blood drawn directly after the accident while Zlobec was taken into custody..re-read the arrest reports! He had a series of prescription drugs in his system NOT alcohol! And funny your little comment there about no one commiting suicide, you mut be his wife! I must mention that there was NO ONE there for him yesterday at court! I was the ONLY victim that showed, praying he would not take the plea bargin and what a surpise he didnt HA HA..now he will serve the max! But uhm he had no family what so ever there to support him and I do not feel sorry for him. He can try to put on this I am innocent act all he wants, the charges are true to the fact..they WILL stick and he will serve the max which by what I understand from the D.A. myabe uhmm 32 yrs or so! Good riddence! Have an argument or question for me, the MOM of KArina Rios, email me..feel free! I am tired of seeing these comments by people who think he should get away with all this!!! mileena245@yahoo.com I look forward to hearing from anyone!

Sevierville spokesman Stalke said they did not do a toxicology exam at the jail and it was standard procedure to taek him to the hospital. When he arrives at the hospital there is suppose to be a law enforcement officer there and "legal blood" is taken in the officers presence and submitted to the TBI laboratory for BAC (blood alocohol content) Apparently according to Stalke this was not done. More negligence by our law enforcement personnel. At least they did not say all these victims tried to commit suicide.
