Local radio group helping
The Call One Now emergency radio system has been activated to help in Haiti communication and relief efforts.
Rick Sawaya, president of Sevier County Emergency Radio Service, said Call One Now includes all SCERS and amateur radio emergency services personnel — a total of 29 people.
“This is what we are about, helping those who need help,” Sawaya said.
Some members will pass on communications directly with Haiti amateurs; others will pass on messages within the East Tennessee area.
SCERS recently held fundraisers to pay for the Call One Now service. Call One Now delivers automated phone calls, within minutes.
According to Call One Now CEO Leib Lurie (www//onecallnow.com), any group planning mission support, donation collection or a Haitian fundraiser can use the One Call Now notification service for free to send voice messages to members and organizations to mobilize relief efforts. Call (877) 698-3262.
Americans trying to locate family members in Haiti are encouraged to contact the State Department at (888) 407-4747.
For more information on local efforts call Sawaya at 429-2422.
