SEVIERVILLE — The Sevier County High School Smoky Bearettes soccer squad picked up just their first win of the season Tuesday night, but it was a big one against IMAC Conference foe Morristown West Lady Trojans, 2-1.

With the win, the Bearettes (1-4-2, 1-0-1) remain undefeated in district play and in control of their own destiny.

“With the tough schedule we’ve gone through at the beginning of the year, it was big to finally get a win,” said first-year SCHS coach Bobby Norwood. “Especially being a district win ..., it kind of helps us control our own destiny a little bit.”

Sevier County’s Alexis Conner came up big for the Bearettes with two goals Tuesday.

In the first half, Conner connected on an assist by teammate Natalie Burnette that led to a 1-1 tie at intermission.

In the second half, Conner dropped a sweet looping shot over the West goal keeper on an Idaly Gonzalez assist with about 30 minutes remaining to make it the final.

Norwood credited his team’s hustle for the win.

“That’s the one thing you can say about our team,.” said Norwood. “We’re going to go out there and bust our butts for 80 minutes.”

SCHS next hosts Cocke County 6 p.m. Thursday.
