Downpours wash out opening day
High school baseball’s opening day didn’t go according to plans Monday afternoon.
Four out of four scheduled baseball games, in addition to a scheduled softball matchup, were cancelled due to rain.
Only one contest, Sevier County baseball at Cocke County, even got started.
Coaches moved the game, which was scheduled for later in the evening, up to 3:45 in an attempt to get the contest in. But by the third inning it was obvious the rain was only getting worse, and the umpires called the game.
First-year coach Casey Taylor’s Smoky Bears held a 3-2 lead at that point in the sloppily-played contest, which saw both teams plate their runs thanks to opponents’ errors in the field.
As of Monday night, only one of the games had been rescheduled, though most of the teams will be in action today in what would have been the second matcup of their two-game series.
CCHS will travel to Sevier County this evening for a 5 p.m. game, while Pigeon Forge will host Fulton for a double-header beginning at 5. Gatlinburg-Pittman will travel to face Carter, as Seymour goes to Cherokee.
