Chicago Cubs Charities will contribute $5,000 towards outfielder Ty Wright’s efforts to raise funds for the people devastated by the tornadoes in Central Oklahoma. The Tennessee Smokies and Wright have also started an online auction of sports memorabilia to raise additional funds to send to Oklahoma. All proceeds will benefit the relief efforts of the Central Oklahoma Red Cross.

“The Chicago Cubs and the Ricketts family are proud of the Smokies’ tremendous generosity in helping the Oklahoma community in their time of need,” said Chicago Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts. “Chicago Cubs Charities will expand these efforts with a $5,000 contribution to further assist families impacted by the Oklahoma tornadoes.”

During the last homestand against the Huntsville Stars, the Smokies also joined Wright’s efforts by holding several fundraising events throughout the series included:

n A postgame tennis ball toss

n An in-game silent auction

n The Smokies pledged $10 for every Smokies hit during the series

n The Smokies, Streamline Technologies and Major League Baseball Advanced Media

combined to donate a portion of every ticket sold during the series

n Smokies Manager Buddy Bailey pledged $200 per win

n The Smokies players and staff also pledged funds for on-field performances

“The overwhelming response from our fans has been great,” Wright said. “I can’t thank the Ricketts family, the Cubs and Smokies organizations and the fans of East Tennessee enough for their generosity helping those affected from the devastating tornadoes.”

Bidding for the online auction is now open and will end at Noon EST on Monday, June 17. There are several items from former Smokies, from major and minor league players and from hall of famers. The auction will be held through www.smokies.milbauctions.com.
