Sevier County graduate Devin Schmidt has been turning heads since he arrived at Delta State.

The freshman forward did it again on Wednesday, earning the Gulf South Conference's Freshman of the Year award while being named to the All-GSC first team. He's the second player in conference history to earn freshman of the year and first team recognition in the same season, following former Arkansas-Monticello's Billy McDaniel in 2003.

The former Smoky Bear is third in the league in assists per game (4) and free throw percentage (.841), seventh in field goal percentage (.527), eighth in 3-point percentage (.400), ninth in scoring (15.7) and 10th in rebounding (5.9).

Schmidt's contributions have helped the Statesmen to a 23-5 record and the top seed in the conference tournament. Delta State will begin its run at a conference title against No. 8 West Florida on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. CST. The Gulf Coast Conference tournament is being hosted by Samford University's Pete Hanna Center.
