Three remaining girls hoops teams play tonight
Three local high school prep basketball teams are playing for their postseason lives tonight in region tournament action.
In Region 2-AA, the District 3-AA champion Gatlinburg-Pittman Highlanders (24-6 overall) will host the Stone Memorial Lady Panthers (10-21) — District 4-AA’s fourth-place team at 7 p.m. at Jack A. Parton Gymnasium.
G-P brings into the game a six-game winning streak and a top-10 state ranking in AA.
Stone Memorial, in the meantime, earned its region berth despite having only won three of its last 15 contests. One of those was a first-round upset of Kingston in the first round of district tournament play, which earned it tonight’s matchup with G-P.
Staying in Region 2-AA, the Pigeon Forge Lady Tigers (17-10 overall, fourth place finishers in District 3-AA) will travel to west Knoxville to face the Christian Academy of Knoxville Lady Warriors (20-7 overall), who were the champions of District 3-AA.
CAK is on a seven-game winning streak, and has won 12 of its last 15. Game time at CAK is also 7 p.m.
Over in Region 1-AAA, the Sevier County Bearettes (15-17) will make the long drive up I-81 to face District 1-AAA’s champion, Science Hill.
The Lady Hilltoppers are 29-3 and were ranked second in the state by sportswriters in the most recent AP prep poll. They’ve only lost one game in Tennessee this season — an 89-70 defeat at the hands of powerful Riverdale back in December.
They bashed District 1-AAA runner-up Tennessee High in the league’s championship game on Monday by 41 points (84-43).
Tip-off, again, is set for 7 p.m.
