Seymour Eagles win first wrestling match of 2012-13 season
MARYVILLE — After falling behind early, coach Alex Cate's Seymour Eagles wrestling squad battled back with a vengeance to defeat William Blount 52-30 Tuesday.
Despite Seymour wins from David Hamilton, at 170 pounds, and 195-pounder Brian Hinz, the Governors got the upper hand early, winning three of the first five bouts to go ahead 18-10.
But a string of five-straight six-point victories spurred on the Eagles, who won six of the last eight matches to take the big team victory.
Drew Cannon started the Blue and Gold run of matches, winning the 285-pound match over William Blount's Erfain Bravo by pin.
Kevin Lambson (106-pound), John McCarrell (113), Chris Hinshaw (120) and Ethan Joyce (126) kept the Eagles streak going to five-straight victories before William Blount's Bailey Short won the 132-pound match to pull with 16 points at 40-24.
A forfeit in the next match, however, which resulted in an Eric Smith (138) win, gave the Eagles an insurmountable lead at 46-24 with just two matches remaining.
Tristan Weaver then won the 145-pound match for the Eagles to push their lead to 52-24.
William Blount's Joshua Bowers won the 152-pound bout, but it was too little, too late for the Governors.
