Former Sevier County High School basketball player Devin Schmidt made his college debut Monday night for the Delta State Statesmen.

The freshman from Sevierville got the start at point guard in his first contest and scored 13 points, including 11 in the second half, of the Statesmen’s 78-68 exhibition victory over the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils.

“Devin’s a player,” Delta State coach Jim Boone said on the radio broadcast after the game. “His instinct is to attack the basket and score ... he has no fear.”

Going up against a team with a 6-11 center, Schmidt was held to two points in the first half, but he caught fire in the second.

The Statesmen opened up the second half with a 7-0 run to gain a 46-39 lead, and Schmidt capped off the run with a layup down the middle after breaking the MVSU full-court press.

After MSVU cut the lead back down to size, Schmidt gunned in back-to-back 3-pointers to stretch the lead to 57-49 with 11:44 remaining in the game.

But the Delta Devils wouldn’t go away.

They battled back to tie the game at 66-66 with 3:10 remaining.

But a 10-0 Delta State run sealed the game, and it’s exclamation point came, again, from Schmidt.

“Schmidt provided the key moment as Mississippi Valley tried to corral him with a full-court press,” a story on the Delta State athletic department website. “(B)ut (he) managed to weave his way down the court and work his way for a lay up on which he was fouled. The talented freshman completed the old-fashioned three-point play that took the air out of the Delta Devils.”

Schmidt’s first official game as a collegiate player will come Saturday, when the Statesmen host Division II’s No. 9 Florida Southern College. Tip is slated for 7:30 p.m. Game audio and video is available on the Delta State website,
