The Gatlinburg-Pittman Highlanders kept it close for five innings against the Knoxville Carter Green Hornets in a first-round district tournament contest at Gibbs on Friday evening, but the Blue-and-Gold pitching ran out of gas in an eventual 10-0 six-inning loss.

Trailing just 1-0 in the fifth and starting pitcher Travis Miller throwing the ball well, the G-P pitcher got tired and the Highlander defense faltered.

“Travis just ran out of gas,” said G-P coach Henry LaFollette. “And we committed a lot of errors.”

The Hornets ended up scoring four runs in the fifth and five more in the six to end it early by mercy rule. And the Highlanders never could manage an offensive charge, managing just two hits on the night.

“We just didn’t play very well,” said LaFollette.

The Highlander baseball season isn’t over quite yet, however, as they will play the Union County Patriots in a do-or-die contest at 11 a.m. today at Pigeon Forge for a losers’ bracket district tournament affair.
