Lady Eagles are Soddy Daisy champs
With wins over Whitwell, Chattanooga Central, Knox Halls, Soddy Daisy and Union County, the Seymour Lady Eagles overcame a early tournament loss to claim the championship of the 2013 Lady Trojans Invitational Saturday evening.
After narrowly toppling Whitwell 8-7 in the tournament opener, the Lady Eagles (9-1 overall) lost their first game of the season 3-2 to the tough squad from Union County.
But Seymour rebounded quickly, earning a 5-4 win over Chattanooga Central before downing Halls 7-0.
Lady Eagles senior Carly Lewis pitched a five-inning no hitter in that win, striking out eight opposing hitters.
She got another shutout later, as she and her team two-hit state power Soddy Daisy 6-0 in the tournament semifinals.
Lady Eagles lead-off hitter, junior Lauren Irwin, was huge in the game for the Blue and Gold. She was 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of home runs and four RBIs.
Teammate Hannah Lawson also added a two-run homer for the Lady Eagles in the championship-game clinching victory.
In the finals the Lady Eagles met up with Union County again, in the teams’ third matchup of the season (Seymour won the first meeting 1-0).
In the championship, the Lady Eagles gave the Lady Patriots all they wanted in an 8-2 defeat.
Again, Lewis earned the win on the mound. She went all seven innings, scattering eight hits and just one walk, while striking out eight.
Heather Foreman led the Lady Eagles hitting attack with a 4-for-4 day at the plate, while teammate Bailey Pierce had a triple and a team-high five RBIs.
Irwin (2-for-2), Lewis (2-for-3), Reid Ballard (2-for-4) and Miranda Duncan (2-for-3) also had multi-hit outings in the championship game.
Seymour will return to the field at home on Thursday before taking off to Kingsport for the Eastman tournament on Friday.
