Letter: Friends of Library thank supporters for book sale success
Selling books at $1 or less doesn’t sound like a winning proposal. However, thanks to the efforts of many committed volunteers, the Friends of Sevier County Public Library System raised $3,747.46 at its used book sale at King Family Library April 1-5. That’s a lot of books!
Admittedly, some of the sales were books on tape, DVDs, CDs, magazines and vinyl records, but they were selling at bargain prices also. Only a few books, including vintage works and those signed by authors, went for more than $1 each.
All the funds raised at the sale will benefit local libraries. The proceeds have been divided equally among Friends groups at King Family, Kodak and Seymour Libraries, whose purpose is to support and advocate for their local library.
Volunteers to staff the sale came from all three communities. They did a great job and we are deeply grateful to them. We heard compliments on the well-organized arrangement of books. Preparing for the sale, running it and clearing up afterward take a great deal of effort and we thank everyone involved.
Thanks also to Werner Garmond, whose expertise on vintage books was invaluable, and to Wilda Parker, who acted as cashier with unflagging enthusiasm. The folks who provided snacks to the workers are great bakers whose products were much appreciated. As always, Library System Director Rhonda Tippett and the staff at King Family Library provided support in a timely and helpful fashion when needed.
At this sale we provided a Bargain Hall where books cost 50 cents or less. We could not have done this without the loan of tables from First Baptist Church of Sevierville. We deeply appreciate this loan.
We ended the week with our popular Bag Sale. We are grateful to Food City for once again providing the bags.
Our friendly customers, of course, are the ones who make the sale not only worthwhile but fun. Thanks also to The Mountain Press and other media outlets for helping us spread the word about this sale.
The next Friends of the Library sale is set for Seymour Public Library on May 30 and 31. The sale returns to King Family Library September 15 through 20. Please save the date for more great reading bargains.
