Letter: Fire victims thank local first responders

Editor,

We wish to express our gratitude to the great Sevier County Volunteer Fire Department, Sevier County Sheriff’s Office, and Pigeon Forge, Catons Chapel and Gatlinburg Fire Departments.

They responded to our 911 call on Saturday, Oct. 19 within minutes to my husband awaking at 7 a.m., in darkness, to a fire blazing out of the roof of our separate garage below our house. We are so thankful that no one, including our neighbors and the firemen, were hurt in the hours they spent fighting the fire.

Also a special note to the kindness of a nameless SCVFD fireman that my husband asked if he could go remove personal items from wall after fire was out. This fireman said no, and went back into garage by placing himself in danger of debris falling and carried them out to my husband. They also pushed other heavy items up a steep hill under our house deck. They went above and beyond their job duties.

We thank all 24 individuals who came plus Tim Long, sheriff’s officer, John Harris, support chaplain and John Specht the Chief of SCVFD concern and help in calming us down. We wish our fellow Sevier County residents continue to support the Volunteer fire department by donations as they do not receive a pay check or equipment and depend solely on our generosity for funding.
