Remember The Santa Fund
Today is the deadline to make donations to The Santa Fund in order for them to count toward this year’s program. We hope you’ll consider this worthy and important charity in your Christmas giving.
The Santa Fund was begun some 15 years ago as a way to ensure that the less fortunate among us in Sevier County can enjoy some of the material pleasures of the holiday season. It has evolved. Today it serves senior citizens who registered last month at Douglas Cherokee and children who signed up at their Boys & Girls Club branch.
All of your monetary gifts go directly to serve the less fortunate, to buy gifts and necessities so the recipients might enjoy some of the fruits of the Christmas season. Yes, this is a religious holiday, but it also has become a secular celebration of the joy of giving and of seeing to it that the needy among us can experience some of the pleasure of getting gifts as well.
The Santa Fund is coordinated by Jana Thomasson, publisher of The Mountain Press. It’s a role she has taken on with delight since she arrived in Sevier County in the 1990s. All we do at The Mountain Press is collect the money. The spending of it and the distribution of gifts to those who signed up are taken care of by the participating agencies.
So far the drive has generated some $20,000, a terrific response to this annual drive. Naturally more would be nice. Today’s deadline is in place to make sure all of the money is used for this Christmas season. However, your gifts beyond the deadline will stay in the fund for use during the 2013 drive.
Donations to The Santa Fund can be made in person at our offices on 119 Riverbend Drive in Sevierville, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., or by mail to P.O. Box 4810, Sevierville 37864. All donations are acknowledged in the paper, and can be made in memory of or in honor of others. You also can donate anonymously.
There are a lot of important causes and drives this Christmas and every Christmas. Choosing among them can be a challenge. We hope you’ll make The Santa Fund a last-minute addition to your charitable giving. And many thanks to those who already have.
