Letter: Sevier County High School shares graduation standards

May. 22, 2014 @ 10:57 AM

Editor,

Graduation is an activity of Sevier County High School. All rules and school-board policies will be enforced.

We believe that the graduation ceremony is a dignified and somber occasion. We would like to encourage the audience and the graduating seniors to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. In the past, parents and family have been unable to hear the name of their child being announced due to the noise and inappropriate behavior of the crowd. We respectfully request that no cow bells or air horns be used during the ceremony. Major disruptions, due to repetitive unruly behavior, will result in the graduation ceremony being stopped.

Graduates: Graduation practice will be held in the gymnasium at Sevier County High School on May 27, at 8:30 a.m. Attendance is mandatory. If you expect to participate in the graduation ceremony, you must attend practice. Dress casually and please be patient.

Dress for graduation: Females should wear dark shoes and a dress, dark skirt or dark slacks. Males should wear dark dress trousers, dark socks, dark dress shoes, white shirt and a dark tie.

Caps are to be worn flat on the head with the tassel on the left side.

Gowns should be pressed. Ladies will need to attach the white collar included with the gown. Only recognized stoles and cords are to be worn.

Do not wear sandals, flip-flops, shorts, sunglasses or any ornamentation other than as specified.

Professional photographers and videographers have been retained by SCHS. Pictures and videos may be ordered. Video and picture DVD orders can be placed after the ceremony by meeting with the school representative at the graduation stage. These may also be purchased at SCHS following graduation.

Graduation will take place at Thompson-Boling Arena at 8:30 pm on May 27. Graduating seniors need to arrive by 7:30 and be in line by 7:45. All family members are also urged to arrive early to avoid delays in traffic and parking. We recommend parking in the facility on Lake Loudon Boulevard above Thompson-Boling Arena. Handicapped parking will be available as well as handicapped seating. Only graduates are allowed on the floor of the arena. Parents will be allowed on the floor once the ceremony is concluded and all graduates have filed out of the arena. Grade cards and diplomas must be picked up within 20 minutes of completion of the graduation ceremony.
