Letter: Reader sees difference in treatment of Nixon, Obama

Back in 1974, when I was 40 years younger, I watched the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite. I watched it regularly!

After a while I got so tired of the same subject, every night. It was Watergate this and Watergate that. I finally gave up and quit watching the Network evening news altogether. How could a silly break-in at the Watergate Complex be so important? It happened about two years earlier, during the presidential campaign. No one was killed! No one was even beaten up!

But the Democrats kept investigating, and the network evening news kept talking about it. After a while the Democrats decided they would try to impeach President Nixon.

The first item was about the President’s efforts to cover-up his staffs connection to the break in. The second was about his administration using the IRS to harass President Nixon’s opponents. The third one was totally silly about our military forces being in Cambodia. They were in Vietnam and the borders were so poorly defined that a person would not know if he had accidentally strayed into Cambodia.

After some time President Nixon gave up and resigned on August 9, 1974. Some young Democrat lawyers, (among them a lady named Hillary Rodham) were wanting to continue to prosecute the now-former president.

One of the early acts of President Gerald Ford was to issue a pardon to the former president. President Ford said he did so because he could get nothing done because of the Watergate mess.

In the early days of Barrack Obama’s presidency he talked of wanting to be like President Franklin Roosevelt.

His health care plans could be compared to Mr. Roosevelt’s passing the Social Security Act. That is about as far as it goes. He soon looked a lot like President Nixon.

The “Fast and Furious” scandal was investigated for a while, but when Attorney General Eric Holder was coming under fire the president issued an executive order to prevent further damage. Attorney General Holder was held in “Contempt of Congress.”

In “Fast and Furious” guns were illegally taken across the border to Mexican criminals. The end result was that several Mexicans were killed by these guns and at least one American also was killed. Next the Obama administration used the IRS to prevent conservative organizations from receiving a tax exempt status to reduce their federal tax requirements.

Now we are hearing a lot on FOX News about Bengazi, Libya where four Americans were killed (including the U.S. ambassador). Democrats say “it happened a long time ago, and we have talked about that enough.”

Seems to me that we should take these scandals seriously, and prevent these things from happening in the future.

Very little about these three scandals has been reported in many newspapers or the network news. Perhaps President Nixon would have been able to complete both of his terms, had he been a Democrat!
