Floyd Leslie Cleaveland
Floyd Leslie Cleaveland, age 86 of Seymour, Tn., went to be with The Lord on Friday, July 12, 2013, while a resident of the Sevier County Health Care Center in Sevierville, Tn. He was born the 6th of 10 children in Norway, Maine on July 7th, 1927. Mr. Cleaveland joined the U.S. Merchant Marines after high school in June, 1945, serving during the last months of World War II and for nine more years after. He was discharged in December, 1954. He was considered a World War II veteran by legislation signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 and was proud of his service. He had participated in many local Veterans and Memorial Day events, proudly carrying the U.S. Merchant Marine Flag. In 1953, Mr. Cleaveland settled in Jacksonville, Fl. where he met and married the former Anita A. Graham and reared 5 children. After the Merchant Marines, he worked for Atlantic National Bank for over 22 years, drove a truck in the uranium mines of Wyoming, worked for the K-Mart and Wal-Mart companies, and as a security officer for NARF (Naval Aviation Rework Facility) in Jacksonville, Fl. until he retired in 1998. He and his wife moved to Seymour, Tn. in December of that year, following his son, Ryan, who had moved to Sevierville in 1995.
Mr. Cleaveland was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and a great-grandfather, and loved being with all of his family. He also loved living in the area of the Great Smoky Mountains, and loved woodworking.
Mr. Cleaveland is preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Hazel Cleaveland, his brothers Edwin, George, and Ken, and his sisters, Hazel Wertz and Agnes Parker. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Anita, sons Kenneth, Lynwood and wife, Kathy, Ryan and wife Edie, Lowell and wife Robin, daughter, Leaette Vollmar and husband, Pete, grandchildren Daniel, Rachel, Mason, Christopher, Olin, Celia, Lyndell, David and Marcia, great-grandson Ryan, brothers Sherwood, Burton, and Roland and sister Bessie Hartford.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 14th, from 3-5 PM at Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville. Funeral service will be held at the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home on Monday, July 15th, at 11 AM, with Rev. Donny Jester and Rev. Ken Cook officiating and eulogy by Pete Vollmar. Interment will follow at the Boyds Creek Cemetery on Jim Fain Road. Funeral arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville.
