It is with loving hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Mr. Jan L. Welch, 70, of Sevierville, who went home to God September 12, 2013 at UT Medical Center in Knoxville.

Jan was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, and is survived by his wife Kathy and her mother Barbara Leith of Sevierville; his son Jerry Welch of Grand Haven, MI; his stepchildren Laurie McNeece and husband Roger of Madisonville; Chris White and wife Laura of Thurmont, MD; Tim White and wife Rhonda of New Bern, NC.; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Carol and Tom King of Kodak.  He also leaves 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, who will greatly miss and always love their “Jan-Dad.”

Jan was of the Lutheran faith and served the Lord through his community volunteerism and service to his country.  He was born in Buffalo, N.Y. and spent his early years in Ohio, Massachusetts, and upstate New York.  He attended Northern Michigan University where he played varsity ice hockey all four years.  He then joined the U.S. Air Force and was a trained med-evac technician during the Vietnam War.  He moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1978 and worked in various government agencies until he retired in 2005.  Throughout his adult life he was a dedicated volunteer firefighter wherever he lived from 1970 until his passing.

To all of his family, dear friends, and brother firefighters, thank you so much for all of your thoughts, prayers, and support, and for enriching Jan’s life while he was with us.  We are grateful to the staff of the cardiovascular intensive care unit at UT Medical Center for the loving care and support for Jan and his family in his final days.

Floral tributes or memorial donations to the Seymour Volunteer Fire department in Jan’s honor will be greatly appreciated.

The family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. Thursday with a memorial service to follow at 6 p.m. in Atchley’s Seymour Chapel with Rev. Carole Martin and Chaplain Paul Trumpore officiating.  Cremation arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home, Seymour, 122 Peacock Court, Seymour, TN 37865, (865) 577-2807.
