Walter Samuel Leiser, age 79 of Sevierville, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014. He fought a courageous battle with Alzheimers. Mr. Leiser was a faithful member of the Lutheran Church and tried to live a life based on his Christian Faith. He worked many hours alongside his friends to help build the St. Paul Lutheran Church. He and his wife, Elizabeth, were married in 1966 in Sidney, Ohio.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army SP2 Armored Division. After serving, he enrolled at Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and graduated with a degree in electronics engineering. He worked setting up and repairing numerically controlled lathes when computer programming was in its infancy. This work with the Monarch Machine Tool Company took him to almost every state during the ten years that he worked for them. He then took a job with Toledo Scale for a short time and wrote batching systems for companies such as Campbell Soup. He always wanted his own business and in 1967 he and his wife bought their first business in Port Clinton, Ohio, the “Gateway” fast food business at Catawba Island. Secondly they bought a fast food store in Marblehead, Ohio and a small motel on the Sandusky Bay. They owned and operated these businesses for almost 15 years. Walt decided to move the family to Gatlinburg, Tennessee in 1980 where they owned and operated Smoky Pines Motel on Baskins Creek Road for 27 years.

Walt’s proudest moments were when each of his sons, Nelson and Samuel, earned their Eagle Scout awards. He helped the Boy Scouts in any way he was asked. He loved to hike in the Smoky Mountains with his Boston Terriers, Spaz and Cheer. One of his goals in life was to be a private pilot, in which he succeeded. He loved boating and water skiing, and fishing for Lake Erie Perch in Ohio. He snow skied and had to try snowboarding when it came on the scene. Everything Walt did, he did with great gusto and joy. He worked hard and tirelessly to provide for his family. He was an honest and honorable man who will be missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin and Myra Leiser, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Kenneth and Elizabeth Ellis.
