Alvin Sims went home to be with the Lord early Thursday morning, April 11, 2013, at his Sandusky, Ohio, residence surrounded by his family, following a sudden illness.
He was born May 10, 1917, in Sevierville, Tenn., to the late Luther and Josie (Lethco) Sims.
Alvin was employed by the city of Sandusky, and worked for Oakland Cemetery, from which he retired after many years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 83 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2529, the Sandusky Eagles, and a new member of The AMVETS, joining at the age of 95. In his spare time he loved garage sales, meeting new people and spending time with his family.
Alvin is survived by his children, David (Mary) Sims, Sandusky; Roy (Ginger) Sims, Huron, Ohio; Diana (Bob King) Sims, Sandusky; Linda (Kevin) Eck, Reynoldsburg, Ohio; stepchildren, Thomas and Gary Tarring, both of Sandusky; Sandra Tarring of Conneaut, Ohio; his sister, Hazel Case of Tennessee; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family members.
Including his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Mary Marie (Spohn) Sims; and his three siblings, Mayfield Sims, Florence Eledge and Rosie Hurst.
Family and friends will be received on Sunday, April 14, 2013 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, where funeral services will be held on Monday, April 15, 2013 at 1 p.m. Rev. Wally Gilbert will be officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Hill Cemetery.
