A 20-year-old Sevierville man drowned Wednesday when he apparently became exhausted while swimming across a cove in Douglas Lake.

Elijah James Dixon, 20, of 419 McMahan Ave. in Sevierville, was swimming with friends near Dyke Road around 1:45 p.m. when he apparently became tired and was unable to continue swimming, Sheriff Ron Seals said.

His friends tried to rescue him but were unable to find him; they called emergency dispatchers at 1:47 p.m.

Rescuers and law enforcement officers responded to the scene, and found Dixon’s body at about 4:15 p.m. in the area his friends saw his body go under.
