The Sevierville Commons Association, a newly formed group that is working to bring more activities and events to downtown Sevierville, hopes to start a new Christmas tradition with Discover Downtown. The new event will take place from noon until 2 p.m. on Dec. 7 around the new city gazebo on Bruce Street.

The event, which will follow the 51st annual Sevierville Christmas parade, will feature photos with Santa, carriage rides, holiday food and performances by the Sevier County Choral Society, as well as Christmas trees, garlands and wreaths for sale.

Local business and property owners in the downtown area make up the Sevierville Commons Association. Chairman Alex Johnson said the group came together with a shared concern for downtown Sevierville.

"We want to see a main street, downtown area for both locals and tourists," Johnson said."We want to draw attention to the history of downtown. We're lucky to have the type of downtown we have, with lots of good opportunities for businesses, and a lot of the locals don't even know about it."

Many of those businesses, Johnson believes, should serve as a bigger draw to the downtown area of Sevierville. "It's kind of amazing," Johnson said. "You can see bus loads of people coming downtown for one reason: to see the Dolly Parton statue."

The association wants to host more downtown events in the future. "We hope not to just have one-time events," Johnson said. "Hopefully we can have events that continue on year after year."
