Recycle old computers, electronics Saturday

If you want to keep your old TV, laptop or stereo out of the landfill, you're in luck. On Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., an electronics recycling event will be held at Walters State Community College, 1720 Old Newport Highway.

"Anything that plugs in, we'll take," said Laura Howard, executive director of Keep Sevier Beautiful, which is presenting the event. "TVs, cellphones, computers, old vacuum cleaners, microwaves, anything."

The electronics event is part of RecycleMania, a friendly competition between hundreds of colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Most of Walters State's RecycleMania efforts involve only the campus, but the electronics event is open to the community.

"The goal is to increase recycling and start good habits with youth," Howard said of RecycleMania.

The recycling event features drive-through service, Howard noted. "Volunteers unload everything," she said.

"The last time we did this, we got a lot of thanks," Howard said. "Electronics drop-off locations aren't always easy to get to."
