Early release not recommended

A trio of Kentucky men who were convicted of killing two local men in a gun battle after a drug deal gone wrong had their first appearance before a parole officer Friday. If the state parole board takes the officer’s recommendation, it will be the trio’s last shot at early release.

Gatlinburg man charged in rape of child

SEVIERVILLE — Police here have charged a Gatlinburg man with raping a child.

Robert Thomas Bradford, 35, of 235 Ski Mountain Road Room 15 Gatlinburg, was charged last week with rape of a child in relation to an incident that allegedly happened in October.

Stanton seeking retrial of murder case

In a motion seeking a new trial for convicted murderer Jacob Stanton, attorney Bryce McKenzie alleges Judge Richard Vance should not have allowed a pathologist to testify as an expert on firearms and accuses the district attorneys who prosecuted the case of prosecutorial misconduct on a number of grounds.

A grand jury is a panel of randomly selected county residents who meet in private to review criminal allegations to determine whether there is enough evidence to justify proceeding with a trial. It does not determine guilt or innocence.

Sentencing reset again for Kerley, Whaley

A federal judge has once again rescheduled the sentencing hearing for a local attorney and developer who were convicted earlier this year on federal fraud charges.

Attorney Jerry Kerley and developer Jeffrey Whaley were convicted in May on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud affecting a financial institution, wire fraud affecting a financial institution relating to the purchase of real property, bank fraud in submitting a false HUD-1 statement relating to the purchase of real property, false statements to a bank relating to the purchase of real property and money laundering relating to the purchase of real property.
